How can people see Emma Watson being verbally attacked online and threatened with hacked nudes being released by men because of her speech on gender equality and still think we don’t need feminism. It’s not women who make men out to be some evil creatures, you guys do that well enough on your own.

Question reblogged from Think This Universe Is Bad U Should See The Others with 47 notes

Anonymous said: The problem with the anti sq ouat queer blog is that she's using her supposed sexuality as an argument against Swan Queen. Being gay and not shipping Swan Queen is like being black and not shipping Ichabbie (they're from Sleepy Hollow) it's basically saying you don't want representation for your own people

Let’s not call it ‘supposed sexuality’, as it’s not really up to us to question it, no? Also, ultimately - we don’t care. The problem with the anti sq ouatqueer blog is that they apparently have this fixated idea that Swan Queen is supposed to be some sort of high commissioner/emissary/representative of lady loving. Which, did the rest of us miss the memo? People ship what they ship the same way they love the characters they love. So here they simply felt something profound for the character who was not inherently evil but did do some horrid stuff, and after spending four decades exacting this empty, fruitless revenge — found love and hope again through this little baby boy (and begans arduous, painful journey to redemption where she realised that she could control her destiny, so she chose the good and the light, after finally being free from the clutches of her mother, the dark puppet-master, and her own wrongdoings) so if they believe she could find ultimate salvation and redemption in the love of one Emma Swan as well — it’s their prerogative.

And yet, still. No one is enforcing anything as any sort of ‘representation’ through Swan Queen. So, you want to be ‘represented’ through imaginary crackship of characters who never even shared a second of screentime (Gold/Graham)? Cool. You want to be ‘represented’ by two-and-a-half seconds of half-assedly bisexual Mulan? Fine. No one’s stopping you. The best part? No one’s going to hate you for it. Or well, no SwanQueener anyway.

So you are right, Anon. All of that is just a nifty anti-SQ ‘argument’ one can hide themselves behind, when all others (she’s a murderer, she’s a rapist, etc — anything else that stems from their basic hate for the character) fail. Which again, snort. None of them (and especially Graham/Hook stans) give a flying fuck about Emma Swan, they just hate Regina, so that single ‘amending’ post after people noticed their hatespewing about the AE interview (namely our Anon, which of course caused another passive-aggressive self-defense) does not rectify the fact that it is an ANTI SHIP BLOG. Not much endorsement of anything else positive, any other more ‘positive’ ship, apart from creating this fake smoke & mirrors facade to basically be — an anti character and anti ship blog. And those do not offer safe haven for anything else but character/ship bashing, which was in this case extended onto the actress that portrays the said character?

And, no. No amount of inanely self-defensive arguments can justify that.

I find all of this fascinating. The anti-sq contingent, including among those who self-id as sq shippers, is a bizaaaaaaare phenomenon. I have never ever ever ever seen anything like the people in this fandom, who make fun of other sq shippers, who jump ‘ship’ into whatever is being promoted in the moment by two people who could care less about their audience, who take things so literally and read at such a surface level but who are also so easily manipulated. I’m sort of baffled to be honest. And the whole sort of ‘I don’t want to be represented by those people’ thing is like…just lots of othering and stupidity. SQ isn’t a club or a political party it’s a movement in some ways, a fictional pairing in a general (obviously) sense.

That bold emphasis I put above hit me like a ton of bricks because that sounds like the statements I heard years ago when I came out in the 90s of femme lesbians not wanting to be associated with the butch lesbians. I can sadly say that I fell into it at one point too when a older butch and quite outspoken lesbian took the reigns of speaking to the local media on behalf of a group I was involved with. I distinctly remember telling my gf (now wife) at the time that it’s “embarrassing” to have someone like that “representing us.” That was my own internalized homophobia talking then and since then I’ve grown up and appreciate those older butch outspoken dykes because now I AM one! LOL! Seriously though, even in our own community, we “other” each other for being too aggressive, too political, too outspoken, too butch, too femme, or because we “flaunt” too much. We’re not immune from being assholes, even to each other.

Never underestimate the lengths some members of a minority will go to to get a pat on the head from their oppressors.

Wow. this meta just went in a really important direction.
